Mobility, like food and running water, is a fundamental human need. It gives us freedom and enables connections. At Spare, we want to move the world and unlock the potential of mobility for everyone. If we succeed in this mission, we can meaningfully reduce humanity's environmental impact, improve equity and enable happier lives for all.
This is a massive opportunity that comes with an even bigger responsibility. Our customers rely on Spare to provide essential mobility services and often depend on Spare for their livelihood. Our industry is depending on Spare to demonstrate that a convenient and sustainable mobility future is possible.
At Spare, we are all here to be a part of this journey. We can bring incredible positive change to the world, and be a part (and own a part) of the business that makes it possible. We're also here to do the best work of our lives, with the smartest colleagues that we've ever had the opportunity to work with. Our philosophy is that a small, brilliant team can accomplish tremendous things. We've seen the success of this philosophy over the last few years, consistently beating out much larger and older competitors with a fundamentally new approach.
In order to achieve our mission, we need this small, brilliant team and an incredible company culture. This page is about that culture.
tl;dr At Spare, we aim to do the following:
The rest of this document outlines in detail, how we achieve this.
At Spare, we don't have a strict set of values, but rather a set of Guiding Principles that represent the most successful people at Spare.
They help us describe what to incentivize and reward, as well as provide general guidance for how to behave in the organization. These principles also form a framework for distributed decision making; they allow you to determine what to do without always having to ask your manager.
At Spare, our team of Spartians (pronounced like Martians) is made up of people who are all highly talented at what they do and are highly effective collaborators. Spartians also consistently embody our Guiding Principles. We've found that the value and satisfaction of being a Spartian surrounded by other Spartians is tremendous.
Our version of the great workplace is not great gyms, fancy offices, or outlandish parties. Our version of the great workplace is an extraordinary team in pursuit of ambitious shared goals. It is on such a team that we believe you will learn the most, do your best work, improve the fastest, and have the most fun.
Creating an entire company of extraordinary individuals is not easy. We must hire well and only keep the star performers, rather than hold on to adequate performers. We provide a generous severance package to all adequate performers, so that we can find the right person for the role.
